Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
