In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
